Silicon is the semiconductor material used in the vast majority of transistors and integrated circuits. It almost entirely superseded germanium in the 1960's but gallium arsenide if now often used for very high frequencies and silicon carbide and gallium nitride are taking over for high voltages and powers such as in electric vehicles.
