Thank you Ruth - worth adding Pi OS to the page though it departs somewhat from the classic Windows paradigm - though not nearly as much as Ubuntu. I've got an installation running under Virtualbox - useful in that context if yu want a lightweight Linux VM and your host machine doesn't have the power to run too many VMs simultaneously.

Interestingly at the skills share yesterday about getting linux running on laptops someone had an old XP laptop. Of the distros that i'd taken along (mint cinemon 20.3, ubuntu and an older mint 32bit lmde 'elsie' ) only the mint 32bit would run on her machine. I have slightly younger vista 32bit sony which cinemon and ubuntu run on.

I have updated the applications section some of the advice was somewhat out of date. I think the printers section also needs work I will have a look at this soon.

Thank you Stuart - that'd be very useful. Windows printer drivers provide features like 2-up and booklet printing, which I use quite a lot. I guess they might be missing under Linux? For a techie, there are things like pstools (if I remember the name correctly) but it's hard work in comparison to selecting the right format in a Windoze driver. And what about selecting double-sided or an alternate tray if supported by the printer? If double-sided wasn't available that would be a serious shortcoming.
