A gnat’s whisker a measure of distance used by engineers, being rather less than you can see with the naked eye and definitely less than a smidgeon. Despite much discussion in corridors and around the water cooler, it seems the British Standads Institute has never been able to decide on a standard gnat, there being so many diptera in the suborder Nematocera.
