Silicon is the semiconuctor material used in the vast majority of transistors and integrated circuits. It almost entirely superceded germanium in the 1960's but is now starting to be superseded by other semiconductors such as galium arsenide for very high frequencies and silicon carbide and galium nitride for high voltages and powers.
