A ZIF or Zero Insertion Force connector is one in which a clamp of some sort is closed to make a good contact after the mating parts have been engaged, instead of the force being applied during insertion. They are commonly used for delicate ribbon cables, and for test rigs where many insertions of devices under test will routinely be made.
