Glossary:SSL
SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is a deprecated standard for securing data over a TCP data stream. It offers encryption using a shared key derived using a secure key exchange mechanism, and allows one or both ends to identify themselves using digital certificates. SSL went through several major versions, but 3.0 was deprecated in 2015 and has been superseded by TLS. Nevertheless, "SSL" is still often used to describe a link actually secured by TLS.
