X.509 is a standard defining a format for a digital certificate which creates a strong association between a identity such as a web site and a public key. That public key can then be used to digitally sign a web page coming from the web site. The digital certificate itself is signed by a chain of higher level digital certificates ending in a "root certificate" which everyone trusts.
