Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun. Being common to all earthlings, in an electronical context earth or ground is taken as the zero of all voltages. A metal stake driven into the ground may be used to obtain a physical earth or ground connection. (The difficulty of providing an earth connection is one of the challenges that will face any furure colonisers of Mars.)
