CISC or Complex Instruction Set Computer is a computer architecture in which the basic machine instructions are generally fairly complex and highly functional, however, this means that they are relatively expensive to implement. By contrast, the RISC or Reduced Instruction Set Computer architecture was developed to optimise performance in other ways. Intel x86 is the most well known example of this architecture.
