Compact cameras

Fixing digital compact cameras.

Summary

(For the moment, this is just a bucket for points to cover.)

Main section

  • Sticky lens cover - dental probe? Care!
  • Stuck lens:
    • Fully charged battery
    • AV cable - may give extra power, recover from power off in invalid state
    • Gently pull/push/waggle/shake/knock against cupped hand as switched on
    • Vacuum cleaner treatment - angle the nozzle correctly, avoid lens cover. (Clean out camera case at the same time!)
    • Paper-probe treatment good quality paper, change as soon as dog-eared
    • Feeler gauge 1.5thou - care!
    • Care not to damage rubber gasket around outer tube
    • Gas duster - care, avoid lens
    • Sewing m/c oil? Probably not
    • What else did online sources suggest? See http://camerarepair.blogspot.co.uk/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
    • Lens repair - may be possible but advanced
    • Replacement lens assy
  • Disassembly - watch out for flash cap, note which screws came from where (egg box), dealing with ribbon cables
    • Broken/faulty screen
    • Jumpy controls

Safety

Consider whether your page should include a specific section on safety, if for example it deals with mains-powered equipment or high voltages, or if special care is required in handling hot or sharp tools, or hazardous substances.
