A protocol in computing terms is a set of rules or standards defining the way in which data is to be exchanged between two or more computers or components of a single computer, for example what messages can be sent and it what contexts by each party, the permissible responses, and how those messages and responses are to be structured and interpreted. Think of it as a Highway Code for computers.
