Glossary:Bathtub curve
Reliability studies in many fields tend to show a common pattern for failures. Manufacturing defects are the principal cause of early life failures, but once these have all been shaken out the failure rate remains fairly low through the expected lifetime of a device. The failure rate then starts to climb as components begin to wear out. So plotting the failure rate against time gives a U-shaped curve, commonly known as the bathtub curve.
