Glossary:Condenser microphone
A condenser microphone (typically a high quality or professional one) contains a thin conducting diaphragm exposed to the sound and a fixed metal plate behind it. When charged to a relatively high voltage, the varying capacitance between them generates a varying output. (A condenser is a historical name for a capacitor.)
