A digital certificate is a piece of data which declares an association between an identity (e.g. the owner of a website or email address, or a software publisher) and a public key. Anyone can then use the public key to verify a digital signature applied to any piece of data by the identity. The certificate is normally itself digitally signed by a chain of more authoritative identities, ending in a well known root certificate which everyone trusts.
