There are many types of rotary encoder, but simple mechanical ones are often found behind the volume control in a digital radio. It can be turned as far as you like in either direction, but in a series of steps. At each step, one of two switches within it turns on or off. This allows a microcontroller to detect the direction and extent to which it's tuned.
