Glossary:SMD
A Surface Mount Device or SMD is an electronic component designed to be mounted on the surface of a printed circuit board, instead of having leads which pass through holes in the board, soldered on the reverse side. Surface mount devices are generally smaller, often much smaller than their through-hole equivalents.
