Glossary:Signal to Noise Ratio
The Signal to Noise (or S/N) ratio is a measure of the strength of a signal compared to any background noise or interference, and is measured in decibels (dB). In an audio system, a high S/N ratio tells you that any background hiss will be imperceptible, and in data communications, the S/N ratio directly affects the rate at which you can transmit data.
