A hypervisor is a program which allows you to run one or more virtual machines, each in its own padded cell and hence prevented from interfering with one another or with the hypervisor itself. A hypervisor may run as an application under a host operating system, or may run on the "bare metal" without an operating system, and hence free to utilise the totality of available computing, memory and peripheral resources.
