If the air flow is impeded or the motor jams the element will overheat very quickly. There should be a thermal cut-out which will operate if the air flow is temporarily impeded for example by a towel. This may be self-resetting. There may also be a non-resettable cut-out designed to prevent a fire if the overheating starts to approach a dangerous level.
