Manufacturing defects are the principal cause of early life failures, but once these have all been shaken out the failure rate remains fairly low through the expected lifetime of a device. The failure rate then starts to climb as components begin to wear out. So plotting the failure rate against time gives a U-shaped curve, commonly known as the bathtub curve."
